Mastering ATC Communications
All pilots must ensure a strong emphasis on ATC communications; here is where a safe flight begins. Understanding the aviation terminology is key for successful training. Let’s start with the basics, all ATC communications are divided into three different phases:
1) The initial contact “You make a request to air traffic control”.
2) The instructions “They give you specific instructions to follow”.
3) The readback “You repeat these instructions to confirm that you understood them correctly”.
The 5 Ws
The 5 Ws is a good technique that includes everything Air Traffic control (ATC) needs to know for them to give you instructions and clearance. The first radio communication would be the hardest one. After, you only need to listen and understand what Air Traffic controllers instruct you, and repeat it back to them.
